West University of Timişoara (UVT), in partnership with the Timiș County School Inspectorate, organized on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, two major events dedicated to education for sustainability: UVT Green Moon Ceremony 2025 and the launch conference of the project "Education for sustainability in the Timișoara community: Green Moon @ UVT and the green schools network", co-financed by the Timiș County Council through the program TIM Culture.
The events brought together over 60 teachers from the pre-university environment, representing 12 schools from Timiș County, who took over good practices from the university environment through the transfer of know-how from colleagues from UVT.
The UVT Green Moon 2025 ceremony opened the day's program and brought together over 80 participants, bringing to the public a diversity of experiences: educational and scientific workshops, guided tours and outdoor activities, exhibitions, but also events dedicated to children, students and citizens of all ages. Previously, in the period May–June 2025, the events within the UVT Green Moon already involved over 2000 people from the community.
During the project launch conference, the partner schools — Sânandrei General School, Banatul Timișoara High School with Sports Program, Buziaș Theoretical High School and Gymnasium School no. 24 Timișoara — along with the satellite schools — "Ana Aslan" National College Timișoara, "Jean Louis Calderon" Theoretical High School Timișoara, "Sf. Maria" Gymnasium School no. 7 Timișoara, Banățean National College, Gymnasium School no. 30 Timișoara, Săcălaz Gymnasium School, "William Shakespeare" Theoretical High School Timișoara and Gymnasium School no. 27 Timișoara — co-created action plans for green schools in Timiș County, with mentoring from UVT specialists and specialized inspectors from ISJ Timiș.
During the Mutual Learning Workshop, participating schools defined their sustainability action plans, in the spirit of open innovation and educational living laboratories, including organizing a pilot version of Sustainability Day in the fall of 2025 and co-creating spaces dedicated to sustainability in each school community — whether it be urban gardens or spaces dedicated to sustainable development — that they will design and implement together with students, teachers, parents and local partners, with the support of UVT.
"Education for sustainability is one of the strategic directions through which the West University of Timișoara assumes the role of leader and partner of the community. By collaborating with the schools in the county, we want to build together sustainable models of learning, innovation and civic engagement, which will inspire and transform society", declared the rector of UVT, Prof. Dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea.
The project's activities will continue in the fall of 2025 through the pilot edition of the action plans for green schools, but also through a variety of training initiatives for sustainable innovation in education.
