Opening of the 2025 edition of the summer school "From East to West. From West to East. A cultural hybridization", at the West University of Timișoara

Between September 1-6, 2025,  Faculty of Letters, History, Philosophy and Theology of the West University of Timișoara hosts a new edition of the summer school "From the West to the East / From the East to the West. A cultural hybridization", an event organized in partnership with the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest.

During this week, master's and doctoral students from the Faculty of Letters in Bucharest are guests of honor at UVT, where they are invited to a series of activities that explore the cultural and historical richness of the Banat region. The project offers participants a special insight into the cultural diversity of the region.

After the opening event, held today at the West University of Timișoara, the summer school program includes thematic workshops, meetings with writers, guided tours and visits to museums, as well as excursions to Arad, Oravița / Socolari, Jimbolia, Lipova / Radna. Under the guidance of personalities such as Adriana Babeți, Dana Percec, Mircea Mihăieș, Marcel Tolcea, Dumitru Tucan, Radu Pavel Gheo, Roxana Rogobete, Alexandru Condrache (UVT), but also together with Mircea Vasilescu and Laura Dumitrescu (UB), the participants will address three major themes:

  • Cultural Proximities. Usage – Plural spaces. Ethnic identity, cultural identities. Multiethnicity, multiculturality. Solidarity and separations. Multilingualism and literary creativity of areas of cultural interference. Interculturality. Interest in experiment and innovation. Timisoara premieres. Case studies.

  • Literary cartographies. Banat in books – a) in the interwar period: Robert Musil, Miloš Crnjanski, Sándor Márai, Ion Slavici, Camil Petrescu, Liviu Rebreanu, Nicolae Iorga, etc. b) in the postwar period: Danilo Kiš, Claudio Magris, Herta Müller, Livius Ciocârlie, Sorin Titel, etc.

  • The United States of Literature? Dilemmas of the Central and Eastern European Writer in the Age of Globalization – Meetings in open workshops with writers from Timișoara: Radu Pavel Gheo, Robert Șerban, Borco Ilin, Daniela Raţiu, Alexandru Potcoavă, Alex Higyed, etc.

The rector of UVT, prof. univ. dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea: "At UVT, culture is paramount, and in Timișoara and the main comprehensive university in the west of the country, hybridization and multiculturalism are signs of normality. Through the summer school organized at the initiative of the writer Adriana Babeți, together with the special team of philologists and writers from the West University of Timișoara and the University of Bucharest, we honor a duty of great importance, that of transmitting further, to young people passionate about literature and the Central European cultural phenomenon, our literary legacies and the multiple cultural values ​​that they entail.”

The event is financed by the Municipality of Timisoara through the Project Center.
