Summary of UVT activities supporting research excellence – 2023

Measures to stimulate open science and the communication of scientific results in 2023:

  • Continuing to provide financial support for articles published under gold open access in WoS journals from the red zone (Q1) and, within the available budget, from the yellow zone (Q2);
  • The active participation of UVT in the national initiative RO-NOSCI;
  • Information sessions on open science;
  • Stimulating the promotion of scientific results under UVT affiliation in social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and other ways of popularizing science (eg: Researchers' Night).

 

The popularization of science through thematic initiatives, such as the Green Month 2023, respectively the Night of Researchers 2023, the Marathon of Researchers. 

  • In 2023, the Western University of Timișoara held its own science promotion event, within the UNight project, implemented in collaboration with the UNITA alliance. The event brought together 7 public encounters with science over 4 different days, over 65 researchers and over 30 hours of science demonstrations accessible to the community.
  • In order to popularize science, CeCOCe – West organized Science Cafe events in the fields of Chemistry, Physics and Arts, with foreign researchers with outstanding results in their research careers as special guests. The events brought together researchers from the regional scientific community and students, masters and doctoral students interested in developing a career in these fields.

 

Measures to attract valuable researchers and expand UVT staff in 2023

  • Implementation of an attractive package for attracting teaching and research staff, through the START Grant program, which recorded 11 contracts in 2023 and another 5 in the first 2 months of 2024.

 

Support centers for researchers

  • UVT's Innovation and Technology Transfer Center (CITT) received accreditation as a ReNITT entity. Also, this center provides support for researchers in various areas: intellectual property, communication and dissemination of research results, technology transfer, creation of spin-offs and start-ups, European projects/funding.
  • The Vest Research Career Guidance and Counseling Center (CeCOCe) carried out permanent counseling, mentoring and coaching activities for researchers. It also developed the Citizen Science West platform to support participatory science efforts in the western region. 
  • The SupportTM Center ran workshops and application work sessions for acquiring/improving skills regarding writing Horizon Europe funding applications.

 

CDI events/Continuous professional development 

  • Partnership with EIT Deep Tech Initiatives, which provides training and professional development for researchers
  • Games of science – an annual event that aims to bring to the forefront the innovative research of young people in various fields, in the form of a unique competition to present research in a concise, clear and engaging way, aimed at promoting effective scientific communication. The event, held in the form of a competition, provides a platform where science enthusiasts can showcase their work, interact with other researchers and gain recognition for their innovative efforts. With editions held in several cities, the Games of Science encourages academic dialogue and knowledge dissemination, with a strong emphasis on the practical applicability and social benefits of research.
  • Network of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Conference (CRAI) 2023 - The purpose of this event was to bring together the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centers from Romanian universities, the Student Entrepreneurial Societies and the community of Alumni Fulbright Scholars, as well as the actors of the start-up and innovation ecosystem in Romania, which supports the academic and research, with the mission of outlining a joint action plan for innovation and technological transfer, respectively for student entrepreneurial societies, which will strengthen the role of universities in the intelligent and sustainable specialization of Romania.
  • Innovation and Tech Transfer week – a marathon of knowledge and exchange of ideas, which gathered the academic community, researchers, students and partners from the socio-economic environment around the essential themes for technological transfer and innovation. Each day of the week was dedicated to a main topic, with special guests sharing their valuable experience and knowledge: 
    • Open innovation and living laboratories - special guest Andrei Son (Continental)
    • Sustainable development and sustainable innovation – special guests Andreea Nicolae (PIVOT-C) and Mircea Stoian (FEPRA)
    • Intellectual property rights and the exploitation of CDI results – special guests Nicoleta Cherciu (Cherciu&CO) and Marius Niculae (ADR West)
    • Promoting science to increase social acceptance - special guests Corina Negrea (Radio Romania Cultural) and Marius Matache (University of Bucharest)
    • Collaboration opportunities between the academic and the socio-economic environment, with a focus on European CDI projects - special guests Elena Ungureanu (UEFISCDI) and Corina Georgeta Barna (USVT).
  • Student visits to the Institute for Advanced Environmental Research, with the aim of promoting research careers

The mission was to outline a common action plan for innovation and technology transfer, as well as for student entrepreneurial societies, to strengthen the role of universities in the smart and sustainable specialization of Romania.
  • Innovation and Tech Transfer Week – a knowledge and idea exchange marathon, bringing together the academic community, researchers, students, and socio-economic partners around essential topics for technology transfer and innovation. Each day of the week was dedicated to a main topic, with special guests sharing their valuable experiences and knowledge:
