Pillar II – Cluster 5: Climate, energy and mobility – Horizon Europe

Types of action

– HORIZON Coordination and Support Actions

– HORIZON Research and Innovation Actions

– HORIZON Innovation Actions

Release date: 17 September 2024

Submission deadline: February 04, 2025 at 18:00 p.m

This strategic direction includes activities aimed at supporting a sustainable, secure and competitive energy source in line with the objectives of Cluster 5. Emphasis is placed on initiatives in the field of renewable energy, energy systems and networks, energy storage, as well as Capture, Use and Storage Carbon (CCUS).

The energy transition will focus on reducing energy demand and neutralizing carbon emissions in the production process, adapting to both current and future climate conditions. Research and innovation (R&I) actions will help transform the energy sector, making it cleaner, safer and more competitive by reducing costs and improving the performance of a diverse range of renewable solutions, in line with society's requirements. In addition, R&I activities support the modernization of energy networks for the integration of energy systems, the electrification of high-consuming sectors (buildings, mobility, industry) and the integration of other renewable and climate-neutral energy sources, including clean hydrogen.

Innovative energy storage solutions, whether chemical, mechanical, electrical or thermal, are essential for this energy system, and R&I actions will accelerate the development of storage technologies at industrial and domestic scale. Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is a promising technology for reducing CO₂ emissions, and R&I activities will support its development in the energy sector and industry.

Areas of impact:

  1. Industrial leadership in essential and emerging technologies for the benefit of people;
  2. Affordable and clean energy.

Expected impact:

The expected impact is the contribution to a more efficient, clean, safe and competitive energy source through innovative solutions for smart grids and energy systems based on high-performance renewable energy. Specifically:

  • Consolidation of Europe's global position in the renewable energy sector, with an emphasis on diversifying the portfolio of sustainable services and technologies and increasing competitiveness on international markets;
  • Ensuring continuous and affordable access to energy for households and industry, including in contexts with a significant presence of renewable and other low-carbon energy sources. This includes advanced solutions for managing a smart, cyber-secure networks, and optimizing the interaction between producers, consumers, infrastructures and energy vectors;
  • Accelerating the development and implementation of CCUS technologies for the reduction of CO₂ emissions in electricity generation and industrial applications, including the conversion of CO₂ into value-added products.

The application submission session is now available for the following calls:

Pillar II – Cluster 5: Climate, energy and mobility – Horizon Europe

Action type – HORIZON Innovation Actions

Release date: 17 September 2024

Submission deadline: February 04, 2025 at 18:00 p.m

Expected results:

It is expected that the results of the project will contribute to the following aspects:

  • Increased involvement of representative groups of end users and citizens in the affected urban environment;
  • Acceptability and adoption greater sustainable deep renovation solutions in the built sector;
  • Reducing energy poverty and mobility problems;
  • Development of plans for built environments that are climate-neutral, sustainable, aesthetic and inclusive, with improved climate adaptation and resilience based on nature-inspired solutions;
  • Improving adaptation and resilience to climate change in built environments.

Scope:

The transition to a climate-neutral society requires the transformation of Europe's building stock into climate-neutral buildings. At the same time, these buildings must become resistant to climate change. This transformation requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond the level of individual buildings and targets urban neighborhoods or districts.

Decarbonisation of the built environment and its adaptation to a changing climate, as well as social needs related to comfort, accessibility, inclusion and aesthetics, cannot be achieved without the active participation of users, building occupants, individual/collective owners and energy communities, which are the beneficiaries of this process.

Professionals such as project developers, architects, engineers, building owners, planners and legal authorities need solutions that enable them to develop, analyze, model, visualize and present a complex set of information in a way that facilitates co-design . This theme focuses on the development of digital solutions that support more active participation of end-users, citizens and other relevant stakeholders in the design, planning and management of the renovation of existing buildings, neighborhoods and/or urban districts.

European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) – Horizon Europe

Release date: 26 September 2024

Submission deadline: December 12, 2024 at 18:00 p.m

Strategic Innovation Agenda (SIA) 2021-2027 a European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) sets the strategic direction, priorities and objectives for the EIT and its Knowledge and Innovation Communities (EIT KICs). This agenda aims to increase the impact of higher education in Europe by strengthening innovation ecosystems. The main strategies under this agenda include:

  • Increasing entrepreneurial and innovation capacity of higher education institutions (HEIs) across Europe by promoting institutional change within these institutions.
  • Strengthening integration and contribution HEIs in innovation ecosystems.

To achieve these goals, the EIT launched Initiative of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), which is essential for economic and social transformation. This initiative focuses on:

  • Building innovation and entrepreneurship capacity at the institutional level.
  • Promoting the strategic integration of HEIs into the wider innovation ecosystem by providing essential knowledge, tools and networks.

The initiative uses EIT's Knowledge Triangle Model, which encourages collaboration between partners in education, research and business to develop innovative action plans. This collaborative approach is designed to create systemic change by facilitating the co-creation of knowledge and impactful solutions to global challenges, both within specific projects and across a broader portfolio.

A central aspect of the HEI Initiative is the commitment to build a dynamic and inclusive community of HEIs and non-HEIs to enhance the role of European higher education in the innovation ecosystem, thus promoting a more innovative and competitive Europe.

Call for Proposals 2024 aims to further improve the quality and competitiveness of European higher education by funding innovation capacity development projects that lead to institutional and systemic changes. The call offers applying consortia the opportunity to tailor their own paths to innovation by selecting activities that meet their specific capacity development needs.

Selected projects will implement funded actions intended to:

  • Strengthen staff capacity.
  • Establish innovation structures.
  • It supports technology transfer activities and business creation.
  • Encourage collaboration between HEIs and business partners across Europe by establishing strategic partnerships.
