The Western University of Timișoara follows an upward direction of positioning in one of the most important academic rankings.

According to the results of the January 2021 edition of the Webometrics International Ranking, UVT ranks 4th out of the 102 Romanian higher education institutions ranked in this top. At the European level, our university is on the 545th place, and at the world level on the 1365th.

The new positions currently occupied by UVT highlight a clear evolution compared to the previous edition of this ranking (July 2020), for the rankings at European level (position 548, with an increase of 3 points in 2021), respectively worldwide (position 1401 , with an evolution of 36 points in 2021).

Webometrics is based on data from open sources reliable and is based on the following three indicators:

1. Visibility (50%) – Number of external networks (sub-networks) generating backlink to the institution's web pages. The maximum value of the indicator is used, obtained from independent inlinks information providers: Ahrefs & Majestic. For greater accuracy, the first 20 are excluded from the calculation linking domains and backlink-s corresponding to them;

2. Transparency (Openness – 10%) – Number of citations of top authors by source. The information from the Google Scholar Citations institutional profiles is used (raw data are available on the same portal, Transparent Ranking section: http://www.webometrics.info/en/node/169). Only institutional profiles are selected;

3. Excellence (Scholar – 40%) – The data are collected from Scimago and represent the top 10% most cited works in the reference fields in the last five years, prior to the evaluation.

The Webometrics ranking is published twice a year (data is collected in the first weeks of January and July to be public at the end of these months) and covers more than 31.000 higher education institutions worldwide. The ranking aims to motivate both institutions and researchers to have a web presence that accurately reflects their activities. If the web performance of an institution is lower than the estimated position, according to the level of academic excellence, the management team of that institution should reconsider the web policy.

Established in 2004 by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) from Spain, Webometrics is a classification system for universities around the world, being based on indicators that take into account both the volume of web content (number of web pages and files) , as well as the visibility and impact of these web publications depending on the number of inlinks external (site citations).
