In the meeting of the Government of Romania, held on Wednesday, December 18 2024, the decision was made to transfer the building (school campus) located in Timișoara, str. . Danube no. 9, county Timiș, where the "Dimitrie Leonida" Technological High School operated. The buildings and their related land, belonging to the former high school, were no longer used for the educational process from the 2019-2020 school year, when the high school level went into liquidation, due to lack of students.
UVT will develop in this location a space with university utilities suitable for the specific activities of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, and the structuring of this new location will be designed as a complete set of Sports, Educational and Research Campus type.
The fundamental motivation behind the request to transfer the administration of this space to UVT consisted in the exponential growth, in recent years, of the enrollment figure and the number of students of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in UVT. In addition, there is another fact worth highlighting, that at the West University of Timișoara all students participate in the Physical Education and Sports discipline, during four semesters, a rare situation in the national academic landscape, which individualizes the type of sports training ensured within the UVT study programs, where the European and national conceptions regarding the organization and promotion of sport, as a human right, are concretely applied.
The future Sports, Educational and Research Campus of UVT will bring a significant increase compared to the current level of the material research base of the Western University of Timișoara, which would facilitate the development of important scientific and educational partnerships, both through collaborations with the other Timișoara universities, but also within the UNITA international consortium, of which UVT is a part. Also in this area of interest, within the Western University of Timișoara, the University Sports Club of the Western University of Timișoara (CSU - UVT) is active, a club that also operates on the material basis of the university, contributing to increasing the complexity of the planning flow didactic classes, overlapping, most of the time, with training or competitions within the sports club.
The West University of Timișoara University Sports Club (CSU - UVT) was established in 2015 and actually started its activity in June 2015. The club currently has 10 active sports sections (handball, volleyball, chess, arts martial arts, paragliding, badminton, cycling, wrestling, football and basketball), already achieving notable results for a club that started from scratch, both from the point of view of the infrastructure and the material base, as well as the athletes.
CSU – UVT promotes with priority the sports disciplines, branches and tests included in the Olympic Games program, mainly in the youth and senior age categories, capitalizing on the sports potential of pupils and students, in the plan of consolidating the prestige of Banat at national and international level. Currently, more than 200 athletes registered with various specialized Romanian sports federations are active within the club. The club aims to activate other sections of the club in the near future, realizing that sport is a determining factor in the evolution of a university, being the basis of the consolidation of institutional membership and the development of its alumni community. In addition, the Western University of Timișoara considers mass sport to be an essential component of society's development, our involvement in this area being extremely important, through the UVT Liberty Marathon, for example, an event already in its XNUMXth edition and which attracts thousands of participants annually.
