Along with UVT, Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj is found in this ranking in the field of Physics, the two universities representing the "Universitaria" Consortium, the strongest academic group in Romanian higher education", said the rector of UVT, prof. Dr. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, acting president of the "Universitaria" Consortium.

The member universities of the Consortium are present in the rankings made for the fundamental field of natural sciences:

The performance indicators of this classification are based on academic performance obtained through scientific research activity, starting from internationally available data from sources such as Web of Science and InCites (of Clarivate Analytics), ShanghaiRanking's Academic Excellence study, Journal Impact Factor, period the reference being 2014-2018 for each evaluated subfield. The performance indicators are: Q1 – the number of publications of an institution in journals Q1 Journal Impact Factor Quartile; CNCI – the share of citations of an institution's publications; IC – the number of publications that were found with at least two different countries in the authors' addresses divided by the total number of publications; TOP – the number of papers published in Top Journals and AWARD – the number of teaching staff of an institution who won a significant award. Thus, these performance indicators measure scientific production, research quality, the degree of international collaboration, good quality research and the highest academic recognitions.

ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China was published for the first time in 2009 and is one of the best rated internationally, representing a point of reference in the strategies of universities that want to be actors of international level in the academic environment.
