Following the tradition of public appreciation of excellence that international personalities from various fields have proven over time, the Western University of Timișoara will award Prof. Dr. George Lusztig, professor of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the honorary distinction The gold medal of UVT - MA - accompanied by a diploma of merit, at the proposal of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.
Mr. Prof. Dr. George Lusztig was born in 1946 in Timișoara, where he attended primary school and high school, being one of the most famous mathematicians born in Romania, a specialist in representations of groups and algebraic groups. His book on quantum groups has been cited over 2000 times. The more than 250 articles he has written have more than 11000 citations in specialized journals.
In 1978, George Lusztig became a professor at MIT, where he remains today. In 1980 he began a fruitful collaboration with DA Kazhdan, and the polynomials they later developed, Kazhdan-Lusztig, bear their name. Since then, intersection cohomology has become one of his main research tools, used in particular in the theory of character sets, which he began to develop in the 1980s and with which he is still concerned today, as well as in the theory of canonical bases which derives from quantum groups, which he began to develop around 1990. George Lusztig made multiple major mathematical contributions, hard to match, with global recognition.
We have the special joy of inviting you to participate in the Awarding Ceremony of the UVT Gold Medal - MA - accompanied by a diploma of merit, which will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 10 a.m., in the A01 Amphitheater of the University of West from Timisoara.
We are waiting for you!
