In the context of the opening of the program of the European Capital of Culture TM2023, the Western University of Timișoara organized a series of philosophical dialogues and political thinking, of introspection and critical evaluation about the past, present and future of Europe, in which the host of the meetings with the public from Timișoara was the prolific writer and professor at the University of Karlsruhe, Peter Sloterdijk.

Three special events, included in the cycle of events "At UVT, Culture is the Capital!" held at the West University of Timișoara in these special days of the opening of the TM2023 program, offered the Timișoara public and visitors from the country and abroad conferences and dialogues full of inspiration.

In the first of the conferences, the well-known philosopher addressed a particularly interesting topic, about Europe, still "a coat too big for most of us". Under the title "Some Thoughts on Europe Today", the renowned philosopher made a foray into the history of the European continent, with vibrant references to the political and social current affairs of our world, particularly attractive for the audience present at UVT.

In the second conference, philosopher Peter Sloterdijk was with Andrei Ujică, the well-known Romanian writer and director, the two protagonists entering into a dialogue about the appearance of photography and film in the century. XNUMXth century, with many subsequent meanings.

In the third event, held this morning at UVT, the academic community of the West University of Timișoara had the special honor of marking, in an emotional ceremony, the granting of the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa Litterarum Humaniorum of the West University of Timișoara, for the significant contributions that the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk has made to the contemporary European philosophical debate.

UVT rector, Marilen Gabriel Pirtea: The Western University of Timișoara, an academic community involved in the life of the Timișoara community, proposes a series of events of a European scale, included in the overall program Timișoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture. The arrival of the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk at UVT, prolific writer and professor at the University of Karlsruhe, twinned with Timișoara, contributes significantly to the quality of the TM2023 program and meets many expectations from the informed segment of the Timișoara public. From today, our university community also includes one of the most renowned philosophers of the moment, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, which UVT awarded to the German philosopher, representing a recognition of the intellectual contribution he brings to the critical debate in Europe today, with impact in all European countries, including Romanian universities. UVT demonstrates through these conferences and ceremonies, dedicated to the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, that the generic we consecrated is again in the foreground - "At UVT, Culture is Capital!".

Last but not least, UVT participated in the opening of the European Capital of Culture 2023 calendar and through the chess competition, organized under the banner "Chess Artist at UVT", in which many participants, of all ages, entered the competition at UVT. Student artists created their own interpretation of chess games, using mixed techniques of decorative art. The result was a special exhibition, through which chess is highlighted through its artistic dimension.
