On November 19, 2025, the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Geography, West University of Timișoara, celebrated GIS Day 2025, an international day dedicated to exploring and celebrating GIS technologies (Geographic Information Systems). This system allows the collection, visualization and analysis of geospatial data, as well as the simulation of processes in geographic space., being used in geographical research and numerous other fields.
The event had a great impact, bringing together over 200 students from high schools in Timisoara and the surrounding area, who had the opportunity to explore geography through practical and interactive experiences. To provide them with the most complete perspective on GIS applications, 15 thematic stands were organized, each with captivating activities, and over 50 student volunteers guided the students, explaining how spatial data is collected, analyzed and used.
Among the proposed activities, students participated in a tactile map workshop, explored various projects exhibited in WebGIS and StoryMaps, witnessed LiDAR scanning demonstrations, took part in interactive geospatial games, including Geocaching, and participated in geographical quizzes, which challenged their knowledge and creativity. These activities provided students with a hands-on and engaging experience, allowing them to directly explore the applications of GIS technologies and understand their importance in geographical research. The event transformed GIS Day into a complex educational day, combining learning with fun and stimulating curiosity.
GIS Day at UVT continues to inspire and motivate students through interactive activities and modern technologies, offering an immersive experience in the universe of spatial data.
The event was coordinated by lecturer Dr. Alexandra Marian-Potra, assistant professor Dr. Fabian Timofte and lecturer Dr. Florentina Popescu, in collaboration with student Denisa Lupu, Cartography major, third year.
