The event marks the continuation in a new format of the programs of the International Faculty of Comparative Law in Strasbourg, a recognized center of excellence in the field of comparative law. Created in 1961 under the aegis of the International Association of Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law in Strasbourg. International Faculty of Comparative Law is the oldest European institution of higher education in the field of comparative law and the major contemporary legal systems. Since its establishment, the International Faculty of Comparative Law has promoted comparative law as a tool through which national legislative policies have integrated European and international standards, and national legal orders have communicated with each other.
In recent decades, the programs of the International Faculty of Comparative Law, organized in three cycles, in French and English, have involved multinational teams of professors from universities belonging to different legal systems and have been intended for the training of young lawyers. Over 5000 participants from all European countries and outside Europe have had the opportunity to benefit from the experience of the programs held in Strasbourg and other European universities. Thanks to Professor Vlad Constantinesco, for many years the dean of the International Faculty of Comparative Law, young lawyers from Romania, together with their colleagues from Central and Eastern European countries, have had the opportunity after 1989 to study comparative law and the great contemporary legal systems and to meet renowned professors from prestigious universities in Europe.
After a period of interruption, the programs of the International Faculty of Comparative Law were resumed in 2025 in Timișoara, through the organization by the West University of Timișoara, together with three important European universities, Université de Strasbourg (France), Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (Spain) and Université du Luxembourg (Luxembourg), of a summer school intended for elite students from master's and doctoral programs in Law, aiming at their deepening the study of comparative law. After the success of the 2025 edition, the consortium of universities was expanded, by including Universität Zürich (Switzerland) among the partners, as well as by inviting participants from the State University of Moldova.
As an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Program accredited by the European Law Faculties Association (ELFA), the summer school in Timisoara will offer over 30 participants, in dialogue with invited professors from the organizing law faculties, lectures, case studies and mock trials that will discuss current environmental law issues, analyzed through the lens of comparative law methods. The exclusive partner of the event is Banca Transilvania.
