The exhibition "The First Keepers of Memory. Paleolithic Burials", an exhibition project dedicated to the first funerary events in the history of humanity, at UVT

The Timișoara public is invited to discover, at West University of Timişoara (Bd. V. Pârvan, no. 4, foyer in front of the Aula Magna), the traveling exhibition "The first guardians of memory. Paleolithic burials", a museum project dedicated to the first funeral events in the history of humanity. The exhibition can be visited until April 10, daily, with free access.

The exhibition itinerary offers an introduction to the world of Paleolithic burials by presenting some emblematic discoveries. These include the burials at La Chapelle-aux-Saints and Kebara, the double tombs at Qafzeh, the famous “Dame du Cavillon” at Balzi Rossi and the discoveries associated with Cro-Magnon man. Burials rich in funerary inventory are also presented, such as that of the “Young Prince” at Arene Candide, but also important archaeological contexts from sites such as Grotte des Enfants, Romito or Riparo Tagliente. The exhibition also includes thematic showcases with skull casts, prehistoric tools and engraved stones, some of which illustrate early manifestations of symbolic and artistic expression. Among the remarkable pieces are the engraved representation of the bull from Romito and a stone decorated with a lion motif, from Riparo Tagliente. These artifacts highlight the connection between funerary rituals, social identity, and the development of symbolic thought in the Paleolithic.

These tombs are important not only because they are among the oldest known, but also because they mark one of the great turning points in human history: the emergence of gestures that speak of memory, belonging, and meaning. In them, archaeology recognizes the beginnings of a profoundly human relationship with death—a relationship in which the body is no longer simply abandoned, but accompanied by practices, signs, and contexts that point to ritual, identity, and symbolic thought.

The membership of the West University of Timișoara to the European alliance UNITA becomes, in this context, more than an administrative framework for academic cooperation: it translates concretely into real opportunities for non-formal education and cultural openness for the community. International exhibitions such as "The First Keepers of Memory. Paleolithic Burials" transform the university space into a true public laboratory of knowledge, in which archaeological research leaves the specialized sphere and becomes accessible to the general public. Through such initiatives, the West University of Timișoara consolidates its status as a regional cultural pole and a platform for dialogue between heritage, science and society, actively contributing to the formation of a scientific culture and to the integration of European heritage values into the educational experience of the general public.
