Anniversary event - 30 years since the establishment of the Faculty of Law within UVT

The academic community of the Western University of Timișoara (UVT) is happy to announce the organization of the event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Law at the Western University of Timișoara, a moment of balance and new future projects, positively charged with the satisfactions and joys of the successes achieved in the development of education in Timisoara's legal sciences.

The anniversary program, organized on May 20, 2022, includes two distinct events. The first of these is the round table "Legal education in Romania. Continuing a debate", organized in the Aula Magna "Ioan Curea" of the West University of Timișoara (V. Pârvan no. 4), in the time interval 9-16. During the second event, the launch of the volume "Imago Iuris. Imaginary of Law”, volume edited under the care of prof. univ. dr. Lucian Bercea, dean of the Faculty of Law from UVT, launch organized in the Baroque Hall of the National Art Museum Timișoara (Piata Unirii no. 1).

The review of the 30th anniversary of the Faculty of Law is the best opportunity for a real debate about the current state of law, which will be guided by the questions and challenges that the organizers propose to students and all other guests:

■ Is there an ideal portrait of the law graduate? ■ What and how uniform should the criteria for admission to law schools be? ■ Can law schools afford to be selective enough with their students? ■ Do law schools have a duty to improve the cultural profile of high school graduates? ■ Can I do this? ■ Do the law faculties manage to cover the training need of a European jurist? ■ How extensive should law schools offer electives and electives? ■ How effective is the practice that law schools provide to their students? ■ What about the Academic Ethics or Legal Writing or Legal Methodology courses? ■ Should mock trials be made mandatory in law school curricula? ■ What else is the role of law degree theses? ■ Is the education provided by law schools relevant to the careers of graduates who fail to enter the traditional legal professions? ■ What is the real portrait of the law graduate? Is there a hierarchy of law schools in Romania? ■ What are the criteria for this hierarchy? ■ Have law schools established after 1989 succeeded in closing the gap with traditional law schools? ■ Is the current law school accreditation and evaluation procedure effective? ■ Why does the Romanian state finance almost 20 law faculties? ■ How many law school graduates does the Romanian judicial system need in the short and medium term? ■ Does the Hexagon of Law Faculties assume a role in the development of legal education? ■ Is a constant circulation of teachers within the Hexagon desirable? ■ What about student mobility? ■ Can interest groups be identified that make attempts to reform legal education difficult? ■ What are the inter-generational relationships within law schools? ■ How do law schools select their PhD students and, among them, their assistants? ■ How relevant are the current promotion criteria in the university career? ■ Is it necessary / desirable for law faculty teachers to combine their academic and professional careers? ■ Do law professors need extra-academic professional validation? ■ Are there scientific researchers in law schools? ■ How many of the law doctorate theses are really scientifically valuable? ■ Is it necessary to validate legal research through the standard of international recognition? ■ How are law schools perceived in their own universities? ■ What about law professors among academics? ■ To what extent does Romanian legal doctrine matter for legal professionals? ■ How much does legal doctrine influence legislative reforms? ■ What should be the ratio of law schools to trainers of the legal professions? ■ At what age and with what experience should you be able to become a judge? ■ What about the prosecutor? ■ Would it be time for access to the legal professions to be conditional upon the completion of a master's degree in law? ■ How relevant and comprehensive is the competition / exam subject matter for future legal professionals? ■ Should there be joint training of judges, prosecutors and lawyers? ■ How should the criteria regarding personal qualities and, above all, the level of maturity reached by candidates in these competitions / exams be formulated and verified? ■ How difficult should exams be compared to competitions?

The legal sciences professionals from the UVT Faculty of Law have prepared an exceptional anniversary program, to mark the 30th anniversary of its establishment, a special day in which debates on current topics in contemporary law will be supported through an interesting exchange of arguments, ideas and pleas. We invite you to participate in the two events of the anniversary program, together with the academic community from Timisoara's legal sciences, which stood out through a competitive course, nationally and internationally.
