We have the great honor to announce the organization of a new edition of the Banking Law Conference in Timișoara, with the theme "From the reinvention of money to the redefining of the role of banks. The contribution of law". The event will take place on March 27, 2026, at the National Bank of Romania - Timișoara Branch and will be broadcast online on the page legal.ro and social media.
The conference is part of the prestigious cycle "Legal Colloquia of the National Bank of Romania", now in its XXXI edition, and is organized by the Faculty of Law of the West University of Timișoara, through the Timișoara Business Law Center, in collaboration with the National Bank of Romania - Legal Department.
Professors from law schools, as well as renowned specialists working in the National Bank of Romania, credit institutions and law firms, are invited to participate in the conference as speakers.
The conference aims to discuss the potential contribution of law, as a systemic regulatory mechanism, in the context of the profound transformations currently occurring in the economy through the remodeling of money and banks. Given that technological innovation, market dynamics and geopolitical developments decisively influence financial intermediation, banking law is at the intersection of continuity and change, through the role it plays in configuring and guiding these phenomena. On the one hand, money is currently undergoing a process of reinvention. Digitalization has radically changed the way value is perceived, stored and transferred, while public and private actors are experimenting with new forms of money. On the other hand, banks are undergoing a process of redefinition. Traditional banking activities (taking deposits and granting loans, plus the related payment operations) are now being challenged by a variety of actors – from fintech entities and decentralized finance platforms to large technology companies expanding their activities in the financial sector. This development strains the regulatory perimeter that has traditionally distinguished banks from other financial intermediaries. Banking law can respond to this functional fragmentation either by extending sectoral regulations to new actors, by recalibrating existing rules, or even by reconsidering the focus of regulatory interests.
The conference will take place on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Timișoara Regional Branch of the NBR (Ion C. Brătianu Boulevard no. 1), between 9 am and 16 pm, and will feature interventions and presentations by:
